My new keyboard arrived!

Hurray! A new keyboard! And I almost entirely like it! It has a few quirks that I don’t entirely enjoy, but overall it is pretty good. Again, this is the Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard 4000.

Things I like:

  • The black and silver and very sharp looking. Even the “Do Not Remove – Safety Information” tag is designed to blend in.
  • Lots of customizable buttons with generic labels.
  • No special “Help” button! I’m so glad a keyboard manufacturer has finally realized that a help button isn’t needed.
  • There are 4 extra keys above the keypad: “=”, “(“, “)”, and “Backspace”.
  • Keyboard remembers that I want F Lock turned on! I HATE how keyboard manufacturers have decided that the function keys should be replaced with stuff like “Undo” and “Close”.
  • The hand rest is VERY comfortable. It’s made of some kind of foam material, and the reviews say it is very durable.
  • Had the traditional 6-key.. umm.. thing above the arrow keys. None of this weird vertical crap.

Things I don’t like:

  • The Zoom button is virtually worthless and not programmable. I’d rather have it set as a, well, pretty much anything else would be nice.
  • Space bar is difficult to press in upper corners. Can be very annoying depending on your typing style.
  • Programmable buttons are not lit, and the writing on them is to mellow to be easily read in low-light conditions.

In sadder news, my families router died today. Luckily we had a spare.

Yodlee OnCenter

So I’ve been using Yodlee for YEARS and recently they decided to rollout a new and “improved” version. It sucks. Really really really bad. Its horrible. They took one of the most useful pieces of technology available on the internet and took out everything wonderful about it and threw in a few (many) handfuls of bugs and called it stable.

Its very frustrating. For those of you who didn’t have the opporunity to use the old Yodlee, let me explain. Yodlee is an account aggregation service. From one page I can see my balances and recent transactions for my stock accounts, credit cards, bank accounts, money market funds, PayPal account, MyPoints account, email accounts (REALLY handy for “logging into” old webmail accounts that you don’t use very often so that they won’t expire), umm… And a bunch of other accounts, too. Pretty much every account that has any kind of transaction data. You can even throw in accounts that don’t have online access (like savings bonds and stuff like that) so your net worth comes out accurately.

But the new version is slow, buggy, and hard to read. They group all your transactions into one big huge long flowing list, so you can’t even tell which credit card you were charged on for what. And the new version doesn’t allow you to update an individual account or see when it was last updated. And I STILL can’t find a button to delete an old account, and I’ve been using the new version for a week or two already. It might have to do with the horrible new labeling. For example, the tab labeled “Manage Accounts” doesn’t allow you to manage your accounts. Instead, it is the tab that allows you to add an account. You have to go to “Your Sites” to manage your accounts, and even then you can’t really manage them because there aren’t any buttons that allow you to modify or delete an account. It’s terribly stupid. Reading the message boards at their site it looks like they are losing business like crazy because everyone hates the new layout.

Anyways. I was just upset over the retarded changes they made and wanted to rant for a bit.

Bleh.. I feel terrible.

Yeah I feel like crap. My heart has been acting funny the past couple days. Its that darn mitral valve prolapse crap I think. Stupid defective heart. Oh well. It normally calms down after a few days.

Yup my life is dull. Been working on the Fake Name Generator some more. Its a fun little project. Up to 11 name sets and 14 countries. And I almost have Germany done (Taking WAY longer than expected. Dumb Germany and their weird telephone system…). Probably the most fun has been learning about other countries. For example, Iceland gave up on area codes a few years back. I guess they decided it was kind of pointless when they don’t even have half a million citizens. So instead they use a 7-digit number. Found a cool little grid that explains which numbers are which. Looks like not even half the possible numbers are allocated for use. Crazyness.

Which reminds me: I hate Internet Explorer. It is such a crappy browser. Why would anyone program a browser to pad a form by default? Thats just retarded. I bring this up because I took a look at FNG using IE and the layout was botched because stupid IE decided it wanted to pad the form elements. So I had to modify the CSS to make it look right. Not a huge hassle, but it is something that shouldn’t have to be done.

So I’m almost done watching Andromeda. Man that show sucks. I loved it as a kid, but I don’t know why. The plot sucks and the dialogue is terrible. But season 5 is quite different than the first 4 seasons, and I’m interested to see where it goes, so I’ll suffer through and finish the series. I think I’ll start Highlander next… Or Simpsons. That’d keep me busy for a while.

Just in case you think I’m a lazy slack who watches TV all day, I really don’t WATCH most of these shows.. Generally I just listen while I’m working on something. Generally I’ll watch like the first few minutes to get the story line and then maybe flip back during the climax of the episode. Most TV isn’t entertaining enough to actually WATCH from beginning to end. And in the rare event that I do watch a full episode, it is generally more of a break so my mind can step back and look at whatever I am working on from a different perspective.

Impermeable Rock

Impermeable – Material that does not permit fluids to pass through it.

So my sister shows me this posh new water called FIJI. On the back is a little graphic showing where the water comes from. So apparantly it rains unto a volcano, and then goes through the dirt, and then somehow magically gets past this barrier labeled “impermeable rock”, and then shoots out in the form of a FIJI bottle. So how exactly, I wonder, does water get through a material that, by definition, doesn’t allow water through it?

About halfway through season 4 of Alias. One thing that drives me crazy is how these field-trained and battle-hardened agents close there eyes before shooting a gun. Umm.. Correct me if I’m wrong… But uhh.. Don’t you kind of need your eyes open in order to aim the gun?

Another annoyance: How come every tech gadget blinks and makes noise? If I were making a spy gadget, I’d probably make it as quiet as possible, and limit the flashy blinking lights. Especially on things like hidden bombs that attach to pipes and cars and stuff. And tracking devices. Doesn’t do you much good to have a tracking device attached to something if it beeps and blinks.

Same with the tricorders on Star Trek. They are always trying to sneak around with this massive blinking beeping futuristic Swiss Army knife.

Sometimes I think it would be cool to have a job as like a technology consultant for TV shows or movies or something. You know, to teach them that “teraflop” isn’t a valid storage capacity, and that a monitor isn’t capable of taking over a computer, even if you use a high tech business card sized one-size-fits-all computer hacking device. That one probably drives me crazy the most. It is a monitor people! M-O-N-I-T-O-R. It “monitor”‘s the computer. The only communication it has is telling the computer what brand and model it is, and maybe what its best resolution is. If you are trying to copy the hard drive (as they did on Alias a while back), the device would best be attached to the COMPUTER, where the hard drive actually is. Or maybe even try using a *gasp* USB device. Copying a metal disc spinning at 7200 RPM using a wireless iPod seems pretty unrealistic.

Anyways, just got an order at the Fake Name Generator I gotta fill.

eBay Suspension – The saga continues!

As you may or may not know, my eBay account was suspended over 1 1/2 months ago for the vague reason of being “associated with a previously suspended user”. I was given that users name, and that is it. This user hadn’t used his account in 5 years, and so I thought it was strange that somehow I (and my mom, and my dad) were randomly selected to have their accounts suspended. Here is an update of my struggle to get my account reinstated.
