Mozy

So I found this awesome new service the other day. It is an automatic backup service called Mozy. Here’s how it works:

  1. Sign up for the free account at Mozy. (If you use my referral code JGA3Y5, which is embedded in the link, they’ll give you and me an extra 256MB for free.)
  2. Install their software. It is very lightweight and lives in your system tray.
  3. Choose what kinds of files you want backed up.

Thats it! It automatically encrypts and uploads your files to their server. The free version only gives you 2GB (or 2.25GB if you use my referral code), but that is plenty enough to backup important documents, spreadsheets, etc. The service can do the backups when your computer is idling, or you can schedule specific days/times for it to run.

So far I am VERY impressed, and am considering upgrading to a paid account (30GB for $54.45/year, or 60GB for $109.45/year. Monthly payment plans also available.).

So give it a shot! Takes like 3 minutes to set up and there is no risk. The link is: https://mozy.com/?code=JGA3Y5 (Remember: The referral code gives you an extra 256MB!)

Ooooo…. Big hard drive….

Yay! I finally ordered a new hard drive! It is a 320GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA. I got it for $109 – $36 GC – $25 GC + $0 S/H = $48. Yeah, 500GB drives are available, but they cost like $200 to $300. The 320GB model has a much better price/GB ratio.

I’m going to try to leave my current 70GB in there and then use the 320GB as the primary drive, and install Ubuntu Linux on it. Then I’ll try to use Windows XP under Ubuntu instead of as the primary OS. We’ll see how it goes.

My new keyboard arrived!

Hurray! A new keyboard! And I almost entirely like it! It has a few quirks that I don’t entirely enjoy, but overall it is pretty good. Again, this is the Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard 4000.

Things I like:

  • The black and silver and very sharp looking. Even the “Do Not Remove – Safety Information” tag is designed to blend in.
  • Lots of customizable buttons with generic labels.
  • No special “Help” button! I’m so glad a keyboard manufacturer has finally realized that a help button isn’t needed.
  • There are 4 extra keys above the keypad: “=”, “(“, “)”, and “Backspace”.
  • Keyboard remembers that I want F Lock turned on! I HATE how keyboard manufacturers have decided that the function keys should be replaced with stuff like “Undo” and “Close”.
  • The hand rest is VERY comfortable. It’s made of some kind of foam material, and the reviews say it is very durable.
  • Had the traditional 6-key.. umm.. thing above the arrow keys. None of this weird vertical crap.

Things I don’t like:

  • The Zoom button is virtually worthless and not programmable. I’d rather have it set as a, well, pretty much anything else would be nice.
  • Space bar is difficult to press in upper corners. Can be very annoying depending on your typing style.
  • Programmable buttons are not lit, and the writing on them is to mellow to be easily read in low-light conditions.

In sadder news, my families router died today. Luckily we had a spare.

Yodlee OnCenter

So I’ve been using Yodlee for YEARS and recently they decided to rollout a new and “improved” version. It sucks. Really really really bad. Its horrible. They took one of the most useful pieces of technology available on the internet and took out everything wonderful about it and threw in a few (many) handfuls of bugs and called it stable.

Its very frustrating. For those of you who didn’t have the opporunity to use the old Yodlee, let me explain. Yodlee is an account aggregation service. From one page I can see my balances and recent transactions for my stock accounts, credit cards, bank accounts, money market funds, PayPal account, MyPoints account, email accounts (REALLY handy for “logging into” old webmail accounts that you don’t use very often so that they won’t expire), umm… And a bunch of other accounts, too. Pretty much every account that has any kind of transaction data. You can even throw in accounts that don’t have online access (like savings bonds and stuff like that) so your net worth comes out accurately.

But the new version is slow, buggy, and hard to read. They group all your transactions into one big huge long flowing list, so you can’t even tell which credit card you were charged on for what. And the new version doesn’t allow you to update an individual account or see when it was last updated. And I STILL can’t find a button to delete an old account, and I’ve been using the new version for a week or two already. It might have to do with the horrible new labeling. For example, the tab labeled “Manage Accounts” doesn’t allow you to manage your accounts. Instead, it is the tab that allows you to add an account. You have to go to “Your Sites” to manage your accounts, and even then you can’t really manage them because there aren’t any buttons that allow you to modify or delete an account. It’s terribly stupid. Reading the message boards at their site it looks like they are losing business like crazy because everyone hates the new layout.

Anyways. I was just upset over the retarded changes they made and wanted to rant for a bit.

Random stuff that I feel like writing about

So uh. Yeah. Random stuff. Lets see:

Some lady wants to put my Ideal Mate list in a book. Neat. I said sure. Her page is at http://www.todolistblog.com if you are curious what it is all about.

Got an email from Rachel today! Haven’t heard from her in FOREVER. Like seriously. Its been.. uhh.. probably around 1 1/2 years since I last talked to her. Was starting to get worried that something had happened to her, being in the Marines and all that.

Hmm. Oh! The Simpsons! Up to season 8. I’m skipping the episodes I know I’ve already seen, of course. Its kind of weird because some seasons I’ve seen all but one or two episodes, and then some seasons I’ve only seen one or two episodes. Of course, it is sometimes hard to remember if I’ve seen the episode or not because the plot tends to shift quite a bit throughout an episode of the Simpsons.

Other than that, just been working on the Fake Name Generator. It is still making enough to pay for itself. I’ve been trying to add in more phone number support for the countries that I have available. And I finished Germany a few days ago! Woohoo! Now I just need to start work on India. Oy. That will be time consuming. Oh well. I’ve had a lot of requests for it, and if it helps boost revenues, then it is definitely worth it (on a side note, I’m proud of myself for finally learning how to spell definitely without having to use a spell checker! :o). And the matching name set should be easy. “Mohammed”. I’m just kidding.. Don’t freak out.. Here, I’ll let you poke fun at my religion for a moment: “Hah those Mormons have a big families! HAHAHA!” There see… I’m fair…

For the past week or two we’ve been getting at least one phone call a day where nobody says anything when I answer the phone. It is so freaking annoying. Its like: idiot! WRONG FREAKING NUMBER! If you keep calling the same number it isn’t magically going to change to the correct one! Of course, thats assuming that is the reason for the hang-ups. Perhaps thats not it at all, and someone is stalking us or something. Or trying to find a time when no one is home so they can rob the place. Hah! Joke would be on them! There isn’t anything valuable here, unless they want a box of 30 PS/2 mice or some surplus Dell mousepads!

Speaking of mousepads, I ordered a new keyboard! Hurray! My current keyboard is the Microsoft Natural MultiMedia Keyboard. I like it a lot but it is PS/2, and the little PS/2-USB adapter I have doesn’t carry over all of the functionality for some reason. The new one is the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. Its a black/silver keyboard so it will match my computer better, and it is USB so it will actually work consistently. Plus I got a great deal on it! $47.99 – $25.00 GC from Stamps.com – $10.00 rebate + $0.00 2-day shipping (free Amazon Prime trial) = $12.99. Not too bad.

I’d love to buy a second monitor, too, but it would cost nearly $400. So no go there. I’d almost be better off buying another computer with the monitor and using the second computer as a file server of web server or something server. And anyways, the need for a larger hard drive is more urgent. I want to get a couple 300GB drives and RAID them so that if one dies I don’t lose everything cause that would suck.

And a cell phone clip would be nice.

And a remote control for my computer. (Should’ve bought it with the computer.. dang being cheap…)

And a TV tuner.

And a graphics tablet.

And.. umm… Thats about it I think.

Oh oh! One of those nifty USB turn tables. That’d be cool.

And a spinthariscope!

And a FrogPad would be nice.

And a Canon EOS20D digital camera. With CF card.

In fact, most of what I want is listed here.
